Is Sam Howell still the franchise QB in Washington? Recent struggles have put that future in doubt

From the moment Ron Rivera named Sam Howell his starting quarterback in the summer, the coach had never flinched. He has praised Howell’s potential, even as he struggled. He lauded his growth, even as the losses mounted. He made it clear he believed the Washington Commanders had found their franchise quarterback.

Then, last Sunday, he flinched.

It wasn’t just that Rivera pulled Howell with 9:05 to go in the Commanders’ 28-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, or that the offense clicked as backup Jacoby Brissett nearly rallied Washington for the win. It’s that the benching was weeks in the making, as Howell’s struggles have mounted.

And it was that Rivera said that if the Commanders still had any shot at the playoffs, he might not be willing to put Howell back in.

“Well, if this was about playoffs and we’re right in the middle of it, that’s something you have to most certainly consider,” Rivera said. “Do we still have that opportunity to continue to win? That’s one of the things you always consider because you have to make sure everybody’s getting the opportunity to be successful.”

That’s something the eventual new regime of the Washington Commanders will have to consider, too. And it’s no longer as easy a decision as it once might have seemed.

It’s not just that Howell has struggled mightily over the last four games — a 59.4 completion percentage, 196 passing yards per game, two touchdowns and six interceptions, including three that were returned for touchdowns. It’s that with him leading the way the Commanders (4-10) have lost five straight, seven of eight have gone 2-10 since their surprising 2-0 start.

As a result, they would currently pick fourth in the 2024 NFL Draft. They have a real shot to pick as high as second. That means whoever takes over for Rivera and general manager Martin Mayhew after the season will be holding a top pick in a quarterback-rich draft and could maybe even have a shot at USC’s Caleb Williams or North Carolina’s Drake Maye, or perhaps LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

The new GM and coach will also have no allegiance to Howell, a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft, nor will they care that Rivera once believed his legacy in Washington would be the franchise quarterback he left behind.

Of course, just because Rivera benched his 23-year-old quarterback doesn’t mean anyone in Washington has — or should — give up on Howell yet. Overall, he’s still had a surprisingly productive season. He ranks seventh in passing yards with 3,568, even though he’s thrown for just 229 total in the last two weeks. He’s completed 64.6 percent of his passes and thrown 19 touchdowns despite being sacked a ridiculous 59 times.

More often than not, he’s been a bright spot on a bad Commanders team.

“There have been some positives and it continues to be positive,” Rivera said. “But the thing you always want to make sure is (that) we’re still seeing the growth. That’s something we have to sit down and discuss and see exactly where we all feel he is.”

Lately, it’s hard to argue there’s been much growth. The six interceptions Howell has thrown in the last four games has ballooned his season total to 15 — the most in the NFL. And it was hard not to notice how well Brissett performed after Howell was pulled on Sunday, going 8 of 10 for 124 yards and two touchdowns on his only two drives.

Yes, the Rams’ defense was sitting back a bit protecting what was a 28-7 lead with nine minutes to go. But there were little things that Brissett did that Howell hadn’t been doing. And there are bigger things, like rediscovering Terry McLaurin, the Commanders’ best receiver. He had a career-high 141 receiving yards on Sunday, including 93 on passes from Brissett. The lack of a connection between Howell and McLaurin has been disappointing all season. One game earlier, McLaurin didn’t even catch a single pass.

That has all helped the doubts creep in where there hadn’t been many before. In early November, Rivera was all but handing the keys to the franchise to Howell. He said, “This franchise has been looking for quite some time and for the first time in a while, I think that that guy might be here.” Now he’s questioning his growth, saying he needs a “reset,” wondering out loud if he’s the guy who gives his team the best chance to win.

“That’s stuff that I have to take into consideration — exactly where he is and how he’s handling these things,” Rivera said. “He’s done a really good job for us and it is a long year. It’s been a tough year. But again, this is stuff that we can hope that he understands, and he learns and he grows.”

There are certainly signs that he has, and he can. As recently as last week, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was still raving about Howell’s progress, his intelligence, his pocket presence and more.

“Do I like what he’s done? Yes, I do,” Bieniemy said. “Obviously, in this league, you’re measured by wins and losses, so we have to make sure that is reflecting in that column. But I’m very happy with his development and his growth process. Do we have a long way to go? Yes, we do, but he’s growing every single day.”

Howell’s teammates seem to sense that and still believe in him, too.

“Sam’s still doing a good job of growing and learning and giving us chance to make plays down the field,” McLaurin said. “We’re still rolling with him. We’ve just got to continue to support him and make his job a little easier.”

“He’s going to be a good player in this league for a long time,” Brissett added. “The key is just you can’t be discouraged, can’t lose confidence, and I’m sure he won’t. I’m sure he can come back and be better than this.”

Howell didn’t sound discouraged after he was benched on Sunday. He even insisted: “I know I’m not defined by this one game.” And he won’t be. Rivera has already said Howell will be the starter again when the Commanders play at the New York Jets (5-9) on Christmas Eve. It’s a good bet he’ll be the starter in the final two games, too.

After that, though, all the bets on Howell are now off, because there are just too many variables about his future. No one knows yet who’ll be in charge, let alone what they think of Howell — or even what new owner Josh Harris thinks of Howell and his potential. It’s unclear just how high the Commanders will be picking in the draft, and what the new boss’ evaluation of the quarterback class will be.

There was a time, though, when Howell seemed to be steaming towards making it an easy decision for whoever ended up in charge. Through the first eight games he had completed 66.9 percent of his passes, he had thrown for 2,146 yards and 13 touchdowns, his passer rating was 90.1, and everyone seemed to believe the best was yet to come.

But the only thing that came next were struggles and doubts, leaving many to wonder if Rivera even still believes the Commanders have their franchise quarterback. Not that it matters, since that won’t be his decision.

The legacy he hoped to leave behind is now very much up in the air.

AC Milan Looks for Win Despite Injuries

Atalanta takes on AC Milan in an exciting Serie A match. Milan looks to win their third straight game and has a good chance of doing so against Atalanta, who’s 6-6-2. At 9-2-3, Milan has been one of the better teams in Serie A this season.

This is the first time the two match up in the league this year, but previous games indicate we should have competitive play. Atalanta, however, has struggled in their first 14 matches and in their last five games. They’re 6-6-2 this season and 1-3-1 in their last five. This is the biggest indication of a Milan win.

Milan suffered injuries in their recent win, which could again be the case against Atalanta. Rafael Leão and Olivier Giroud were both out against Frosinone in Milan’s 3-1 win. Although Leão is still doubtful for the game against Atalanta, Giroud is set to return and aims to build on his tally of 11 points, currently placing him second in the Serie A rankings.

Atalanta Needs A Win

At some point, Atalanta has to win a game. The 6-6-2 record isn’t much to write home about, but the start of the season proved that they’re one of the better teams in Serie A. Atalanta may not be counted among the elite teams, but they can defeat any opponent.

They’ve done everything at an average rate thus far. Atalanta has allowed 16 goals, which is about the middle of the pack, and has scored 21 goals, which is slightly above average.

Gianluca Scamacca and Ederson have been pivotal for their club, with both players ranking in the top 20 for points this season. But Scamacca is out injured till next month, while Ederson hasn’t scored in the last three domestic games.

Head-to-Head Statistics

Atalanta and AC Milan have met 34 times. Milan currently leads the all-time series with 16 wins. Atalanta has 10 wins, and there have been eight draws. Atalanta has not secured a victory in their last five encounters with Milan. The two teams met in February of 2023 with Milan winning 2-0.

Player Focus

The standout player in this matchup is undoubtedly Olivier Giroud. Giroud is one of the best players in the league and will impact every game he plays. Given his absence in their last game, how he plays is something to look out for. Milan will find themselves in a good position to win if he does what he typically does.

Tactical Analysis

AC Milan has been a force on offense, posting 24 goals. Their ability to score and defend has been impressive and shows the complete team they are. They’re the more talented team in this matchup, so unless Olivier Giroud is out, expect them to win.

Atalanta vs. Milan Expert Predictions and Analysis

With this being a home game for Milan and them being the better team, they’re most likely the best pick for the match. Expect them to come out and win in a closely contested game. Atalanta has struggled recently, which will play a huge factor.

Betting Odds

Atalanta is 2.52 to win the game, while AC Milan is 2.84. A draw, which is my second favorite football bet for the game, is 3.28 odds.

Conclusion

Due to the oddsmakers giving us 2.84 odds for Milan to win, we can’t pass it up. These odds give us an opportunity to make money at plus value. This will be a good, close game, but ultimately, Milan sneaks away with a close win.

Book of Dead Free Spins for NHL Fans: Where Slots and Hockey Fandom Collide

[ad_1]
سایت طوفان بت
سایت toofan bet

In the world of online gaming, the intersection of sports fandom and casino entertainment is creating a unique and thrilling experience for enthusiasts. One such fusion that has gained immense popularity is the targeting of the “Book of Dead” slot game – with its special offerings of Book of Dead free spins – to draw in audiences from the passionate fanbase of the National Hockey League (NHL).

This unlikely pairing is proving to be a winning combination, offering hockey fans a new way to engage with their favorite sport and potentially make some good wins in the process.

About the Slot

The “Book of Dead” slot, developed by Play’n GO, has become a household name in the online casino world. Known for its captivating graphics, immersive gameplay and the potential for good winnings, it has attracted players from various backgrounds.

However, it’s the recent surge in popularity among NHL fans that has given this slot game a new dimension.

The Connection With the League

The connection between a slot game and a sports league may seem unconventional at first, but the Book of Dead’s theme lends itself well to the excitement and intensity of NHL matches. The game is set in ancient Egypt, following the adventures of an explorer searching for hidden treasures. This theme resonates with hockey enthusiasts who are used to the thrill of the game and the pursuit of victory.

What sets this fusion apart is the introduction of “Book of Dead Free Spins for NHL Fans.” Online casinos are now offering special promotions that cater specifically to hockey lovers, allowing them to enjoy their favorite slot game with added benefits. Free spins on the Book of Dead slot are being given away as part of these promotions, providing fans with an extra layer of excitement as they spin the reels in anticipation of uncovering hidden treasures.

The synergy between the slot game and NHL fandom goes beyond the thematic connection. The fast-paced nature of hockey mirrors the adrenaline rush experienced during a spin on the Book of Dead slot. Both activities demand quick thinking, strategic decision-making and a bit of luck to achieve a favorable outcome. For NHL fans who already relish the unpredictability of the game, trying their luck on the slot reels adds an extra layer of entertainment.

Immersive Experience

To make the experience even more immersive, some online casinos are incorporating hockey-themed elements into the Book of Dead slot interface. Players may find themselves surrounded by hockey jerseys, ice rinks and cheering crowds as they embark on their quest for wins. These additions enhance the connection between the slot game and the beloved sport, creating a seamless blend of casino entertainment and NHL enthusiasm.

The Wrap-Up

For hockey fans looking to take their love for the sport to the next level, the Book of Dead Free Spins promotions offer a golden opportunity. Not only can they revel in the excitement of spinning the reels, but they also stand a chance to win real prizes while celebrating their passion for the NHL. As this trend continues to gain momentum, the marriage of slots and sports fandom is likely to become a staple in the online gaming landscape, providing a thrilling experience for fans across the globe.

سایت طوفان بت : Oscar Piastri flops as Charles Leclerc takes pole

[ad_1]

Australian Formula 1 prodigy Oscar Piastri will start the Las Vegas Grand Prix 19th after having a terrible qualifying run on Saturday night (AEDT).

The McLaren young gun was second on the timesheets in practice three but flopped in qualifying one, failing to advance after only managing a fastest lap of 1:35.068.

The overwhelming consensus is Ferrari was robbed of a front-row lock-out after Charles Leclerc took pole and Carlos Sainz clocked the second-quickest lap. Despite doing that, Sainz will start 12th on Sunday night (AEDT) due to the 10-place grid penalty he automatically triggered after being cruelled by a loose drain cover on the opening night.

Three-time world champion Max Verstappen will start second in his Red Bull, while Mercedes’ George Russell snagged third on the grid.

It was a sorrowful night for both Australians as Daniel Ricciardo only managed to qualify 15th in his newly adopted AlphaTauri.

Piastri was clearly frustrated as he spoke with Formula 1 TV after his qualifying run.

“Earlier tonight the pace in P3 [practice three] was good. The tyres were in a good place. The pace at the start of qualifying was good,” Piastri said.

“I don’t know if we were one of the only ones to not use two sets of tyres. If we were I think that probably explains it a lot, because [over] the first few laps we were in the top five more or less. So I don’t think it was really an issue with pace; just [the] run plan maybe wasn’t what it should have been.”

The 22-year-old laughed about avoiding the Las Vegas nightlife while preparing to start a long way back on the grid.

“Well, I’m not going to go to the casino and hopefully all the luck comes out tomorrow,” Piastri said with a grin.

“There’s a lot of long straights, tight corners. The tyres are very difficult to get in the window, so maybe that’ll catch some people out.

“We’ll try our best.”

Jayson Tatum, Celtics showcase new outlets to snap offensive lulls vs. Knicks

[ad_1]
سایت طوفان بت

Through the first quarter-and-a-half of action in the Boston Celtics’ Monday night win over the New York Knicks, the shots weren’t falling. Sam Hauser jumped out to a 3-of-4 start from distance, but outside of him, the Celtics shot 2-for-12 to open the game.

Boston’s offense process looked good. They were moving the ball, hitting their spots, and generating open looks. However, a bad result can lead to hanging heads, especially when the approach is sound.

But in head coach Joe Mazzulla’s mind, the threes weren’t the issue.

“Can I ask you a question?” Mazzulla said when asked about the cold shooting start. “Do you know how any missed layups we had in the first half? How come no one notices those? We had four missed layups for shots at the other end. I thought we played with great balance, and I think a missed layup can hurt you more than a missed three because it’s usually a five-on-four situation.”

Derrick White missed two, Kristaps Porzingis missed one, and Jaylen Brown did as well. For the Celtics, those missed opportunities led to clean looks for the Knicks on the other end of the court.

“I mean, if I could come up with another shot besides a three or a layup, I’ll do it,” Mazzulla said with a laugh. “You can’t kick it in. I mean, we couldn’t throw it in the ocean.”

Missing layups may be more costly on the court, but NBA players are confident in their ability to make shots at the rim. Missing a bunch of threes, on the other hand, could lead to hesitation.

Jayson Tatum started the game 0-for-6 from distance, but that didn’t slow him down.

“You put the work in,” Tatum said of his confidence level to keep shooting. “I’ve played enough games, had enough tough shooting nights. I mean, Game 6 last year was the prime example against Philly. I couldn’t hit a shot.

“But all good really, really good scorers know it just takes one to change your momentum, change how you feel about yourself shooting the ball. And once you see one go in you just feel a lot better about yourself.”

His cold start quickly turned into a red-hot scoring night, as he shot 5-of-6 from deep following his 0-of-6 opening. Tatum finished the night with 35 points on 13-of-23 shooting, and the interlude between his three-point slump and three-point barrage was full of new-look offense.

Tatum started the game 3-of-3 from the field, and then he took the ball beyond the arc.

Nothing. Three misses in a row from distance.

After three straight missed triples, he took the ball back inside. Tatum posted up, got in deep, and sunk a tough and-one just inside the paint.

Then he went back out behind the arc.

Nothing once again.

He followed that up with a dunk in transition and another post-up against Hart from which he nailed a turnaround jumper.

Then, after a few more misses, Tatum finally nailed a three at the 4:19 mark of the third quarter. From there, the floodgates were open. He shot 4-of-5 from deep the rest of the game and made his last four attempts.

Despite a rough stretch from deep, Tatum was able to find a rhythm by getting inside and working the post, something he’s been collaborating with assistant coach Sam Cassell on. And he’s not the only player getting to those spots.

“I think this year, what we have that we didn’t last year is we go to our post-up,” Mazzulla explained. “That kind of settles us down a little bit. It gets to a different spacing. It allows guys to give them a comfort level, and it helps us get to the free throw line a little bit. They beat us at the free-throw line.

“So I think when you’re going through those [cold spells], it’s something that we didn’t go to as much last year. This year, it’s like, ‘Okay when you want to settle it down, can we get JB JT Jrue into a post situation to create something? But you got to make the shot at some point.”

The Celtics shot 7-of-19 from three in the first half. A respectable 36.8%. But they were getting clean looks. And with a little work inside, they transferred their interior dominance to the outside.

In the second half, they went 12-of-24 from distance. A healthy process is the key to a successful offense, but having multiple spots to attack helps smooth out the kinks when shots aren’t falling. For the Celtics, the post-up is their newest weapon.

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns (7-1) and the 15th-ranked scoring defense will host the No. 25 Kansas State Wildcats (6-2) and the 13th-ranked scoring offense on Saturday, November 4. The Wildcats are 4-point underdogs.

The Longhorns’ last game was against the BYU Cougars, and they won by a score of 35-6. In their last contest, the Wildcats won versus the Houston Cougars, 41-0.

Here’s everything you need to know about the matchup between Kansas State and Texas — the point spread, moneyline, total Over/Under and a pick from our betting analyst Geoff Schwartz.

Texas vs. Kansas State Prediction

  • Pick ATS: Kansas State (+4)
  • Pick OU: Over (49.5)
  • Prediction: Texas 27, Kansas State 26

Pick via FOX Sports Betting Expert Geoff Schwartz

I don’t like to be on the side of the public ‘dog when I’m not getting the best of the number, but I do believe Kansas State is going to keep this game close.

The Wildcats are playing outstanding football lately, especially on defense, where they have not allowed a touchdown in nine quarters. Their defense is seventh in points per drive and 23rd in explosive play rate.

Texas is without Quinn Ewers, so Maalik Murphy will make his second start. Murphy has talent, but he’s not Ewers and the Wildcat defense should be able to slow him down. The Longhorns are also struggling to convert on red zone opportunities, and without their starting quarterback — against this defense — that task is even more difficult.

Kansas State’s offense is roaring right now behind Will Howard, running back DJ Giddens and a solid offensive line. KSU is playing a formidable Texas defense, one that is ranked 14th in points per drive and has a havoc rate in the mid-30s. It will be a cage fight between the KSU offense and Texas defense.

This game is evenly matched, with both teams able to do multiple things well. Because Texas has a backup quarterback, the edge goes to Kansas State for me.

I’m taking the Wildcats to cover.

PICK: Kansas State (+4.5) to lose by fewer than 4.5 points (or win outright)

The 2022-23 football season has seen two youngsters dominating the scoring charts, which indicate the passing of the baton from the duopoly from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland have been the regular names in the scoresheet, while Ronaldo has earned his name back among the leaders for the top scorers in this calendar year, in international and club football combined.

Against Damac FC in the Saudi Pro League, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored from the free-kick after nearly seven months to get yet another goal to his name in 2023.

With the 2023-24 season getting all the more competitive, here is the list for the highest goalscorers this year:

2. Erling Haaland: 40 goals, 44 games

Five-star WR Ryan Wingo recaps Missouri game day visit – Rivals.com

Saint Louis (Mo.) University High wide receiver Ryan Wingo remains the only uncommitted five-star in the 2024 class making his recruiting battle one of the most highly contested in the nation. Wingo keeps his intentions relatively close to the vest and maintains that he is still wide open with his recruitment – leading to much speculation about which schools really stand at the top. The latest buzz is that Texas and Missouri could be the schools to beat with the latter receiving a game day visit for Saturday’s showdown between the in-state Tigers and LSU.

Following his return from Columbia, Wingo caught up with Rivals to recap the game day visit and discuss where he stands with his recruitment.
