AUGUSTA, Ga. — A victory at the 2024 Masters seemed inevitable for Scottie Scheffler.

The Texan has been ranked No. 1 in the world for more than 80 weeks during his short career. He’d won eight times on the PGA Tour since February 2022, a stretch that saw him become the first golfer ever to win the Players Championship in back-to-back years.

Scheffler is regarded as perhaps golf’s best ballstriker since Tiger Woods in his prime, and Scheffler’s magical hands around the greens also have drawn comparison to you-know-who.

Until Sunday, Scheffler had only one major championship victory, the 2022 Masters, which might have been the only reason anyone would doubt his status as the game’s next generational star.

After entering Sunday’s final round of the 88th Masters at Augusta National Golf Club in a three-way tie for the lead, Scheffler ran away from the other contenders on the second nine to win a second green jacket in three years.

Scheffler carded a 4-under 68 over the final 18 holes to beat Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg by 4 strokes. Aberg, who was an amateur at Texas Tech a year ago, was attempting to become the first golfer to win the Masters in his debut since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979. Aberg posted a 3-under 69 in the final round.

Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood tied for third at 4 under.

“I did my best to stay calm out there,” Scheffler said from Butler Cabin before 2023 champion Jon Rahm gave him the green jacket. “I did my best to stay patient on the course. And I was able to make some key shots and key putts today to keep my round going.

“Ludvig played great today. He made a move on me on the back nine, and I was fortunate to hold him off there toward the end.”

At 27, Scheffler became the fourth-youngest golfer to win multiple green jackets; only Jack Nicklaus (25 years, 81 days), Woods (25 years, 100 days) and Seve Ballesteros (26 years, 2 days) were younger.

Scheffler claimed his second Masters title in only his fifth start at Augusta National, which is the second-fewest starts needed to accomplish the feat in the tournament’s history. Horton Smith won two of the first three Masters, in 1934 and 1936.

Scheffler also became only the fifth golfer in Masters history to win multiple green jackets by 3 strokes or more, joining Woods (1997 and 2002), Ballesteros (1980 and 1983), Nicklaus (1965 and 1972) and Sam Snead (1949 and 1952).

“Obviously, Scottie is an unbelievable golf player, and I think we all expect him to be there when it comes down to the last couple holes of a tournament,” Aberg said. “He’s proven it again and again, and I think he makes us better. He makes you want to beat him, obviously, and that’s the same for me and the same for everyone else in this field.”

In the past 35 days, Scheffler has won three times against elite fields at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players and now the Masters.

“It’s just what he’s been doing,” said Xander Schauffele, who finished eighth at 1 under. “It’s been a while since we’ve had a guy out here that tees it up and he’s supposed to win and he wins.”

What is Scheffler doing so well?

“I mean, everything,” Morikawa said. “He drives the ball plenty, plenty long, well past me. Hits his irons obviously spectacular, keeps it simple, makes the putts when he needs to. If he doesn’t, still has plenty of chances, and just never put himself in trouble.”

The final two pairings of Aberg-Homa and Scheffler-Morikawa made their way to Amen Corner (hole Nos. 11 to 13) shortly before 5 p.m. ET. By the time they left, only one of them — Scheffler — still had a prayer to win.

Aberg made the first big mistake when his sweeping shot from 216 yards went too far left and bounced into a pond at the par-4 11th. He made a double-bogey 6 and fell 4 shots behind Scheffler.

A short while later, Morikawa hit his approach shot from nearly the same spot as Aberg. He yelled, “Damn it,” after his ball took flight and watched it bounce into the pond. The result was his second double bogey in three holes — he couldn’t get out of a greenside bunker on No. 9 on his first try — as he fell 5 shots behind Scheffler.

“Greed got the best of me,” Morikawa said. “Nine, can’t miss it over there and can’t leave it in the bunker. Eleven, just tried to hit too perfect of a shot. It’s not like at that point I was trying to press. I knew where I stood. Yeah, it’s just can’t do that.”

Then on the 12th hole, where swirling winds, a narrow green and the intimidating Rae’s Creek have spoiled many Masters hopefuls’ dreams over the years, Homa’s chances took a devastating blow. He didn’t hit a bad tee shot on the shortest par-3 on the course, but his ball leaped high off the sunbaked green and settled in vines on a bank.

After watching his ball bounce hard off the green, Homa asked his caddie, Joe Greiner, “Where did it go?”

After a couple of minutes, Homa found it in the thick ground covering, but he had to take an unplayable lie and a 1-stroke penalty. His chip shot got caught up in the fringe, and he two-putted for a double-bogey 5 to drop to 5 under.

“The honest answer is it didn’t feel fair,” Homa said. “I hit a really good golf shot, and it didn’t feel fair. I’ve seen far worse just roll back down the hill. Yeah, the professional answer is these things happen.”

Scheffler made a bogey of his own at the 11th when he missed the green, chipped to 9 feet and missed a par putt. He played it safely on the 12th and made par.

Scheffler ended any doubts about winning again when he made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14. On the par-5 13th, he reached the green in 2 shots and two-putted for a birdie to move to 9 under. Then on the par-4 14th, he spun his approach shot to a foot and tapped in to go to 10 under.

By then, Scheffler’s lead was 3 over Aberg and 5 over Homa and Morikawa.

Scheffler added another birdie on the par-3 16th, and what had seemed inevitable for so long was now reality.

Arguably the biggest match this Tuesday is a London derby between rivals West Ham and Tottenham at the London Stadium.

Both teams are still in the fight for a spot in Europe next season, with Spurs eyeing a return to the Champions League for the first time under Ange Postecoglou.

The Hammers are hoping to secure their third Premier League double over Tottenham, having done so in the 1998-99 and 2013-14 campaigns.

Current Form

West Ham’s current form

Tottenham’s current form

Spurs have earned a huge 22 points from losing positions in 2023-24, which is three short of a club record in a Premier League season. They achieved the feat at the weekend again as they came back from behind to defeat Luton 2-1, with Heung-min Son scoring in the 86th minute.

Prior to Saturday, Tottenham suffered a surprising 3-0 away defeat at Fulham.

West Ham’s recent form has been up and down as they have won two out of their last five, with none of those wins coming in the last three.

Morale will certainly be downbeat after they surrendered a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 against Newcastle.

Team News

Alphonse Areola was taken off injured in the loss against Newcastle and he has been ruled out of this one with a groin problem, so Lukasz Fabianski will start in goal. Edson Alvarez remains unavailable due to suspension.

Fraser Forster, Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon are the only Spurs absentees.

Scoreline Prediction

There has been inconsistency from both teams recently but Spurs should have enough to overcome a West Ham side in a likely high-scoring game.

The 54 goals they have conceded in the current campaign is only one fewer than they did in the whole of last season.

Gareth Southgate gives update on Reece James' Euro 2024 hopes

Gareth Southgate is hopeful that Chelsea right-back Reece James will have a chance to prove his fitness ahead of Euro 2024.

The England boss has refused to rule out James, who has remained out of action since sustaining a hamstring injury against Everton back in December.

After undergoing surgery, James is now in recovery but is yet to return to training with the Blues.

The race against time is now on for the 24-year-old, who hopes to earn his spot in the England squad and travel to Germany in June.

Despite his lack of game time, Southgate is eager to remain hopeful around James. When asked if he was out of contention for the tournament, Southgate said: “No, we don’t have an exact date for him coming back but we would hope he would have some games before the Euros.

“Could he play seven games in the Euros? His record over the last few years would suggest no. But is he a top level player who could provide something important, no question.

“So yeah again he is another one who the first step is get back into training, get back into the team and build that physical resistance as quickly as possible.”

James’ surgeon, Dr Lasse Lempainen, told The Telegraph that he would be back in shape before the European championship. However, club boss Mauricio Pochettino has been reluctant to put a date on his return.

With friendlies on the cards against both Brazil and Belgium, all eyes will now be on Southgate as he looks to cement his final choices ahead of the Euro 2024.

Australian football great Mark Bosnich plans to return to work on Friday after being rushed to hospital for a heart scare.

Bosnich posted a thumbs up photo and message on social media from hospital in Sydney where he had a stent inserted.

The 52-year-old ex-goalkeeper was admitted to hospital on Wednesday and Stan Sport’s Max Rushden and Craig Foster explained the situation before kick-off in Thursday’s Champions League round of 16 clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Real Sociedad.

“We miss you buddy. I hope you’re well and feeling OK,” Foster said.

“For those of you who don’t know, he had chest pains, he’s had a stent put in,” Rushden added.

Rushden and Foster said Bosnich became concerned while exercising at work on Wednesday.

“He was making a lot of noise… and he said ‘I’m going to get it checked out’,” Rushden said.

“He did, he’s OK, he’s back tomorrow but we are sending you our love Boz, it is very quiet without you.”

Foster applauded Bosnich for immediately seeking help.

“If you’re not sure about anything, health wise, get checked,” Rushden pleaded.

“Men are useless at talking about it and doing anything about it.

“The sooner you find anything is wrong, the better it is. That is our message and that is Bozza’s message too.”

Bosnich represented Australia, Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa during a wildly successful and colourful career.

He has since become one of the country’s most beloved and entertaining football broadcasters.

Australian boxing champion George Kambosos Jr posted: “Speedy recovery Bozza.”

Justin Tucker explains pregame dustup with Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce

[ad_1]

Before Sunday’s AFC Championship Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens, three of the biggest stars on the field got into a brief conflict.

Ravens kicker Justin Tucker moved his practice tee, football and helmet to warm up on the Chiefs’ side of the field — right where Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes was doing his own warmup routine. Mahomes repeatedly moved Tucker’s tee and holder after the longtime Ravens kicker would set it up to practice kicks.

Star Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce eventually walked over and tossed Tucker’s helmet and practice football off to the side.

Whatever mind games may have been afoot appeared to work out in the Chiefs’ favor, as Mahomes and Kelce provided just enough offense to back up a stellar performance from Kansas City’s defense in a 17-10 Chiefs win.

After the Ravens’ season-ending loss Tucker said he thought the pregame interaction was not a big deal. According to Tucker, it’s commonplace for kickers across the NFL to practice on the opposite side of the field from their team’s designated warmup area.

“I saw Patrick there trying to warm up and get some dropbacks and he asked me, while I was on the ground stretching, if I could move my helmet. I happily got up and I moved my helmet out of the way — at least I thought it was enough out of the way,” Tucker said. “And then Travis comes over and he just kicks my stuff and he throws my helmet.

“I thought it was all just some gamesmanship, you know, all in good fun, but they seemed to be taking it a little bit more seriously. I’m totally willing to let it all go, but I just wanted to explain that that’s just what I have done for 12 years and it’s not like I’m out there trying to be problematic.”

Former NFL offensive lineman and current FOX Sports Radio host Rich Ohrnberger said that while Tucker was correct in saying kickers doing so is commonplace, it serves no purpose aside from gamesmanship and Mahomes and Kelce were justified in their actions.

Tucker is a highly respected veteran and considered one of the greatest kickers in NFL history. Of course, Mahomes and Kelce may be two of the most well-known figures in the entire league both on and off the field, especially since the duo has helped the Chiefs to four Super Bowl appearances (and, thus far, two wins) over the past five seasons.

سایت طوفان بت : What Raheem Morris’ return to Atlanta means for the Falcons

[ad_1]
سایت طوفان بت
سایت toofan bet

The Atlanta Falcons are planning to hire Raheem Morris as the team’s next head coach, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday.

Morris was last in Atlanta three years ago when he was the interim head coach after Dan Quinn was fired following the team’s 0-5 start. Morris went 4-7 as the interim coach, and Atlanta hired Arthur Smith to replace him. The Falcons fired Smith after three 7-10 seasons.

Morris comes from the Los Angeles Rams, where he had three successful seasons as the defensive coordinator and is widely respected around the league. He’s coached on both sides of the ball.

He’s the first head coach owner Arthur Blank has hired with prior NFL head-coaching experience; he was head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011. A young head coach at the time — he was 32 when he was hired by Tampa.

This concludes a search where Atlanta interviewed 14 candidates for the position and had multiple second interviews, including with former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

Taking a closer look, Falcons reporter Michael Rothstein answers two big questions about Morris’ hiring, including what will happen at quarterback. National reporter Dan Graziano dishes on what he’s hearing about the hire and why it wasn’t Belichick, and draft analyst Matt Miller spins it forward to the draft. Finally, front office analyst Mike Tannenbaum grades the hire.

What has changed since Morris was Atlanta’s interim coach in 2020?

Rothstein: A lot. The roster is almost completely turned over from when he left following the 2020 season. Only cornerback AJ Terrell, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, left tackle Jake Matthews, right guard Chris Lindstrom, right tackle Kaleb McGary and kicker Younghoe Koo remain from the roster he left behind and are under contract for 2024.

He’ll also be working with a different general manager, Terry Fontenot, who was brought in in January 2021.

The only thing that will look the same to him might be Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the practice fields.

Swagu: Raheem Morris’ success as a coach tied to the QB position

Marcus Spears says Raheem Morris is the right hire for the Falcons, but adds that he will ultimately be judged on his choice at starting quarterback.

What will the Falcons do at quarterback?

Rothstein: This is an open question and might be dictated by who Morris decides to hire as offensive coordinator.

Both Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke — Atlanta’s quarterbacks last season — remain under contract in 2024, but Blank called their play “deficient” during his Jan. 8 press conference after firing Smith. So it’s easy to surmise the Falcons will look to replace part — or all — of their quarterback room from a season ago.

Ridder was a third-round pick in 2022 and is on a rookie contract. Heinicke is a potential cap cut, a move that would save Atlanta $7 million.

Morris was on the Rams staff last season when Baker Mayfield came in as a late-season replacement, and he is scheduled to be a free agent, so there would be some familiarity there if Tampa Bay was unable to come to terms with Mayfield. But that’s all speculative at this point, and Mayfield and the Bucs have expressed a desire to work something out.

It’s highly possible Atlanta brings in a free agent veteran for at least the first year, and if a rookie quarterback makes sense, the Falcons can either trade up or draft one at No. 8 and have them compete. Or there might be longer-term answers like Kirk Cousins or Russell Wilson.

Once Morris gets settled and assembles his staff, the first big piece of what he and Fontenot have to figure out is what to do at quarterback and how that quarterback fits into an offense with good skill position players: Running backs Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier, receiver Drake London and tight ends Kyle Pitts and Jonnu Smith are all under contract for 2024.

Why didn’t the Falcons hire Bill Belichick

Graziano: Multiple sources have said for weeks that Blank went into this process wanting Belichick, and I think the league and the industry expected that to work out. But there were hurdles that couldn’t be cleared. The organizational structure in Atlanta involves Blank and CEO Rich McKay, and a lot of the discussions with Belichick centered on the idea of what McKay’s role would be if Belichick came to coach the team — and how much power and control the various parties would have in the end.

Belichick — who is 15 wins shy of breaking Don Shula’s all-time record for most by a head coach — was seen as a short-term play, so there were some in the Falcons’ building who were concerned about overhauling things extensively only to potentially have to do so again in a few years. Blank may have gone into the process wanting Belichick, but he also went in with an open mind and was willing to listen to the input of others in his organization. All of that, combined with already high opinions of Morris, led to this surprise result. And it could leave Belichick without a job in 2024.

What else are you hearing around the league on the hire?

Graziano: Morris has as good and complete a resume as any candidate in this cycle, plus a strong relationship with Blank. So after interviewing 14 candidates, including Belichick twice, the Falcons made a hire that makes all kinds of sense for them.

Morris was on Atlanta’s coaching staff from 2015-20. A longtime defensive coach, he moved to the offensive side of the ball to coach Falcons wide receivers from 2016-19. He then became defensive coordinator in 2020 and served out the final 11 games of that season as interim head coach following Quinn’s firing. For some reason, Blank decided at that point to hire Arthur Smith instead of Morris. Well, three years later, the Falcons corrected their error.

Morris is extremely well-liked and well-respected around the league, and Sean McVay and the Rams were pushing for him to get a head coach job this offseason. Morris had his second interview with Blank earlier this week, and sources said it went great, which is no big surprise. The two men are very close. But between his previous (albeit long-ago) head coaching experience, his work as an assistant on both sides of the ball and the time he spent under McVay (whose assistants always seem to become head coaches), Morris returns to Atlanta with all of the requisite experience to handle this job.

If Morris opts to do defense at No. 8, who is the perfect fit for his first pick as the Falcons’ coach?

Miller: The 2024 draft class isn’t rich with top-end defensive talent, but if Morris has his sights on a defender at No. 8, Alabama’s standout pass-rusher Dallas Turner fits the bill. He’s my top-ranked defender in the class, and he reminds me of the Jaguars’ Josh Allen because of his awesome length and speed. Turner had 10 sacks in his final season for the Crimson Tide, and he not only has immediate starter ability but also the highest upside of all defenders in this class. That’s what the Falcons need, considering they posted a pass rush win rate of 30.9% in 2023, last in the NFL.

How would you grade this hire?

Tannenbaum: B. Morris did an outstanding job rebuilding a very young and inexperienced Rams defense, but he has gone 21-38 as a head coach (three seasons with the Buccaneers from 2009-11, and an interim stint in Atlanta in 2020). His first decision as the Falcons’ coach — who will play quarterback — will be absolutely critical for Morris.

سایت طوفان بت : Rafael Nadal fires shot at Novak Djokovic amid GOAT debate; Roger Federer’s edge

[ad_1]

Rafael Nadal has fired a rocketing forearm at long-time foe Novak Djokovic.

In the latest chapter of the tennis legends’ simmering feud, Nadal has responded to comments made by Djokovic in December, when the Serbian champion recalled a time that he shared a Roland-Garros locker room with his Spanish rival. Djokovic told CBS’ 60 Minutes that the intensity of Nadal’s warm-up and blaring music were “pissing me off”.

Nadal told Spanish publication El Pais this week that it was “never, never, never my intention” to intimidate Djokovic, before knocking Djokovic down amid the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) debate.

“Since I have a memory of tennis, [Roger Federer] is the player who has impressed me the most, the one who has entertained me the most, the one who has moved me the most,” said Nadal, whose prickly relationship with Djokovic is contrasted by his deeply special bond with Federer.

“Watching Federer play has moved me more than Djokovic, and in the end, tennis is about emotion. It’s the emotion that draws you to it.”

Djokovic has won a record 24 singles grand slam titles, placing himself ahead of Nadal (22) and Federer (20) in the GOAT debate purely in terms of numbers.

Federer won his final grand slam title at the 2018 Australian Open and announced his retirement four years later, calling time in September 2022.

Nadal continues to fight on — he’s Down Under for another Australian Open — but whether the 37-year-old’s battered body will allow for another grand slam title is tough to predict.

Watch the United Cup from December 29 to January 7 live and exclusive on Nine, 9Now and on Stan Sport.

Djokovic, in contrast, is still exceptionally fit at the age of 36 and highly likely to add more grand slam triumphs to his resume. He’s the hot favourite to win a record-extending 11th Australian Open title in Melbourne this month.

But as Nadal noted in his interview with El Pais, “there are several factors” to weigh up in the GOAT argument — not just statistics.

“Some I won’t tell you because it’s difficult for me, it’s not my place to comment on them, but in terms of tennis, it’s clear,” Nadal said.

“It’s a combination of very radical styles. Federer was perfection in terms of aesthetics, elegance and technique.

“I have very good technique, but technique is not the same as aesthetics. They are two different things. He had incredible technique, doing things beautifully with impressive elegance.

“We have all reinvented ourselves [and] that’s why there has been this intense rivalry. We always surprised each other. Djokovic, as well, but with a difference compared to the two of us.

“He hasn’t needed to evolve [his style] as much as we have. He hasn’t suffered as many injuries. The only thing that has demanded him to improve his game has been his rivals, not physical issues. That’s a difference.”
